Beneath the Crossing

Beneath a green metal bridge in Belfast, shopping trolleys lie partly submerged in dark water. Reflections ripple around their wire frames. Above them, the crossing remains open, carrying people onwards.

Paying attention does not always bring us to something beautiful. Sometimes it asks us to notice what has been discarded, and what a place has been left to carry.

Pilgrimage passes through these places too. If we seek grace in the world around us, we must also attend to the harm it bears. Caring for a place begins with seeing it clearly—and remembering that the water beneath the bridge is part of our shared home.
