At first, the weathered carving on the seventeenth-century Archbold chest tomb at Moone seemed almost unreadable.

Then a bunch of grapes emerged—and beneath it, what looks remarkably like a swan.

The published description identifies vine tendrils among the tomb’s ornament, while its slab once carried the Archbold arms and symbols of the Four Evangelists. On a tomb shaped almost like an altar, the grapes invite a Eucharistic reading: wine, Christ’s blood and the promise of life beyond death.

Sometimes old stones yield their meaning slowly. We only have to keep looking.
